Skyler & Samantha | Summit Grove Lodge

I love firsts in wedding photography. First time photographing a slip & slide send off, first time photographing bride & groom flip cup, the first time photographing a bride and groom being carried up in chairs while dancing. Since we’ve been shooting weddings since 2011, firsts are getting more and more rare. But with Samantha and Skyler’s Valentine’s Day wedding, this was the first time I got to photograph a new husband cut his wife’s hair during cocktail hour. And no, he’s not a hair stylist of any kind, his only training is he knows how scissors work. Somehow, the result? Well, you have to see for yourself.

This was also the first time I have been able to photograph at Summit Grove Lodge in Washington. Something couples often ask me is “have you photographed at this venue before?” Personally I do better work when it’s my first time, because I arrive a good 1-2 hours before I am supposed to start (just in case something happens on the drive), but mainly so I can scout and look around. Having fresh eyes as a photographer is sometimes a great asset. This venue was a regal and cozy setting, set into the beautiful trees of Ridgefield, Washington. The rain was kind to us, and as a special treat, my wife, Susannah got to photograph & video alongside!
