When Being Negative is Good
I have wanted to write this for awhile now but have not had the time! Christmas, it’s just around the corner! -
So in the name of “giving” I thought I would share a small tip when it comes to photos.
-
When we take pictures we tend to try and compact as much info into a photograph as possible. The whole group of kids, the table of food, the massive stack of presents, and so on. While this is not always bad, there is another thing you can do that can sometimes really add to a photograph. That is “Negative Space”. The idea that your subject is cast against a backdrop that is completely different. So in a black and white image, your subject may be a small head in the frame, and the rest is all black. That is an exaggerated example but the idea can be used through out photography. Especially this Christmas season!

When you grab your camera this Christmas morning think about negative space. It can be used to really focus on the emotion in the moment. The joy of opening that first bike, the new deluxe Barbie doll, or a new tool set!
-
To give you an example I snapped some shots of my adorable nephews as they played outside. Not all of them have to deal with negative space but most of them do!

Enjoy and have a very Merry Christmas!
