Jeff & Stephanie | Speakeasy on Alder Lane
A ceremony only an hour before sunset (7pm!). Cocktail hour before the ceremony. Dinner in the woods in the dark. They did everything ‘wrong’, or, did they do it right? Who said to do things in a certain way, in a certain time. Believe it or not, I am a huge fan of traditions and liturgy, however you should know why you’re doing them and not just doing them because “it’s what people do”. So much of wedding photography has turned into posing to get certain shots, because “those are the shots you need”. My photography approach is becoming more and more documentary-style, that I find myself gravitating toward couples just like Stephanie and Jeff. They are doing things that are meaningful to them, they are throwing a party for their friends to truly enjoy. They aren’t doing things for the photos, or for the pomp of it all. They are getting married because they want to marry their best friend, and they want to celebrate that with their friends and family. I really thrive in this kind of environment because I have spent the last 14 years honing in on the skill of noticing. Learning to see peoples connections with each other. In search of the true and the real. Not the perfect, the posed, and the fake.
Oh and they got married at The Speakeasy on Alder Lane, which is equally private and sneaky to find. Stunningly-kept grounds and an incredible location for a fun wedding for around 100 people. You can stay on-site in that white house and you have tons of fantastic shade for the hotter wedding days. It’s very versatile as well for many different wedding layouts.

The caterers got stuck; naturally, the groom pulled out his new truck and used it to pull out their van.
