Andy & Harley | Vietnamese Tea Ceremony + Portland Wedding

When Harley & Andy chose us as their wedding photographers last year, we were totally thrilled and so excited to be a part of their Vietnamese-Filipino wedding. They were endlessly adorable for their unique Portland engagement session, and their relationship is just darling. Not only are they totally in love with each other, but they're some of the kindest and most others-focused people we've ever seen. Their wedding-day was no joke--possibly one of the hottest weekends of the year, and they were flawlessly gracious and classy through every stage of their 13+ hour wedding day!

They started the day bright and early at her parents' home, where they had a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony with the two families.

Andy's family came bringing gifts, including a whole roast pig (!), which is traditional for both Vietnamese and Filipino cultures, and the two families were introduced.

And then Harley was brought out! Andy's family gave her gifts of jewelry, and then they gave tea to their relatives as they honored them for being the reason they were here. It was such a special ceremony to witness, and a hand-full to capture, since we never knew what was going to happen next! One of our goals with our photography is to be able to capture the traditions of different cultures, and so this was dream-come-true for us. Every time I looked over at Peter (while I was running around trying to squeeze my huge pregnant belly between people!), he was just beaming. :)

After lots of eating (everyone made SURE that I'd eaten plenty), we all headed over to St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Southeast Portland for the ceremony.

They incorporated Filipino elements into the ceremony, including the veil, coin, and candle lighting portions. We loved how many great moments there were, even during the very formal ceremony!

Paper airplanes have been a huge feature in their relationship--he asked her to be his girlfriend and proposed using them, a la Paperman. So they brought a bunch, and we had to have some bridal party paper airplane wars!

It was HOT! They were troopers, snuggling up and wearing crazy-warm clothes for all their photos!

Their party-hard reception was at the Embassy Suites by Hilton--and let me say, that was some darn good planning for an August wedding. Blessed air conditioning! The partying wasn't hindered at all. And, bonus: the photographers didn't die of heat stroke!

They had a totally amazing, choreographed, song-switching first dance. Definitely a crowd-pleaser!

As per tradition, they even went around to each table with their bridal party to greet and toast their guests.

KILLER father-daughter dance to Sunrise, Sunset.

And then the money dance--including money crowns.

We even set up an impromptu photo booth, with the help of our assistant for the day, Lucia!

A seriously amazing day that used us all up and was a total blast! So happy for you two, Harley & Andy!
